I’m about to be thrown in the lion’s den
I’m wondering how things might have been
If I had just prayed one less time a day
My friends all think they know what’s right
They appointed a counsel to tell me what’s right
Don’t look now but the hairy beasts are on their way
But I’ve got to do just what I know is right
No looking back
no giving in
Faith will win the fight
Someone told me just take a vacation
And give a soft hand to life
But as sure as God is on the throne
I’ll be sleeping on lions tonight
The Back Story
In this poem I was inspired by Daniel from the Bible. The King orders that no praying to God can take place and yet Daniel still prays with an open window in plain sight. In the Old Testament, Jesus had not yet died for our sins, so communication from God was external instead of internal. Often, angels would be sent to deliver messages instead of God speaking directly to your spirit. With Daniel, this was true. The prince of Persia (leader of the dark side for that region) was inhibiting Gabriel from delivering a message from God to Daniel. Gabriel was held up for 21 days before he had to call Michael the warrior arch angle to clear the path - and get through the enemy forces. In the first stanza the last two phrases, "I'm wondering how thing might have been, if I had just prayed one less time per day" - was not meant to indicate doubt of the heart. When we go through challenges on a daily basis all of us have doubt in our heads, but its most important that we don't doubt in our hearts - because that's what enables us to achieve the desired end result. I don't believe that Daniel doubted in his heart at all.
I feel like this poem has the potential to be converted into a song as well. Stay tuned for an appearance in a possible future issue down the road.
